Descrizione

Il genere comprende, con poche eccezioni, specie mwhgepifite, con accrescimento mwhwsimpodiale, dotate di mwiapseudobulbi di forma ovale o sferica, con una, talora due o tre, mwiqfoglie al loro apice.
Come in tutte le mwiwOrchidaceae, i mwjafiori sono mwjqtrimeri, mwjgzigomorfi, con uno dei mwjwpetali modificato in mwkalabello, il cui aspetto funge da richiamo per gli mwkqinsetti impollinatori. Caratteristicamente l'mwkginfiorescenza si sviluppa alla base dello pseudobulbo, carattere questo che consente la differenziazione dal genere mwkwmwlaDendrobium, per altro molto simile, in cui le infiorescenze si sviluppano sui lati o sulla cima dello pseudobulbo. La colonna, l'organo in cui sono racchiusi sia la parte maschile (mwlqpollinio) che quella femminile (mwlgstigma) ha un piede genicolato cui è attaccato il labello. Il risultato di questa conformazione è una notevole motilità del labello stesso, che vibra ad ogni alito di vento, attirando gli insetti impollinatori.cite-ref-siegerist-2-0[2]

Distribuzione e habitat

Il genere mwnqBulbophyllum ha una distribuzione mwngpantropicale: il centro di massima mwnwbiodiversità sono le foreste montane della mwoaPapua Nuova Guinea (più di 600 specie) ma il genere è presente anche in mwoqAustralia, nel mwogSud-est asiatico (oltre 200 specie in mwowBorneo), in mwpaIndia, nel mwpqMadagascar (mwpg188 specie, alcune endemiche), in mwpwAfrica, in mwqaAmerica centrale e nella fascia tropicale del mwqqSud America.cite-ref-siegerist-2-1[2]

Tassonomia

L'esatta posizione filogenetica del genere mwsaBulbophyllum all'interno della sottofamiglia mwsqEpidendroideae è stata a lungo incerta.cite-ref-chase-dna-3-0[3] Dressler (1993) assegnava il genere alla mwtgsottotribù Bulbophyllinae (tribù Podochilaeae)cite-ref-4[4], ma studi filogenetici successivi hanno indotto ad includere le Bulbophyllinae nella sottotribù mwvaDendrobiinaecite-ref-chase-dna-3-1[3]cite-ref-5[5], sottotribù attualmente attribuita alla mwxqtribù mwxgMalaxideaecite-ref-ch-6-0[6]

Il genere fu descritto nel 1822 da Louis-Marie Aubert du Petit-Thouars nel suo "Histoire particulière des plantes orchidées recueillies sur les trois Iles Australes d'Afrique, de France, de Bourbon et de Madagascar", e in questa prima descrizione gli vennero attribuite 17 specie.
Allo stato attuale esistono oltre 2000 specie descritte.cite-ref-powo-1-1[1]
L'alto numero di specie ha indotto i tassonomi a proporre la suddivisione del genere in oltre 120 sezioni e sottogeneri sui quali tuttavia non esiste un accordo unanime.
